OUR FOUNDATION
We are a branch of The First Church of Christ, Scientist, Boston, formed in early 1879 “…to commemorate the words and works of our Master [Christ Jesus], which should reinstate primitive Christianity and its lost element of healing.” (Church Manual, p 17.)
In 1895, Mary Baker Eddy, the discoverer and founder of Christian Science, ordained the Holy Bible and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures as universal Pastor, readings from which comprise our weekly Bible Lesson sermons.
Members are dedicated to the six Tenets of Christian Science and guided by “A Rule for Motives and Acts”: Neither animosity nor mere personal attachment should impel the motives or acts of the members of The Mother Church. In Science, divine Love alone governs man; and a Christian Scientist reflects the sweet amenities of Love, in rebuking sin, in true brotherliness, charitableness, and forgiveness. (Church Manual, p. 40)
As a branch, we aspire to reflect in community what Eddy gave as the spiritual definition of Church.
FATHER-MOTHER GOD
In addition to “Spirit,” biblical descriptions of God and the Word of God include truth, life and love. Eddy’s definition of God includes these as divine synonyms. Her spiritual interpretation of The Lord’s Prayer renders God as Father-Mother.
CHRISTIAN SCIENCE IN JP
Christ Jesus said: “…behold, the kingdom of God is within you.” (Luke 17:21). Eddy defines this kingdom as heaven, where divine harmony reigns. Like Old Testament prophets, Jesus demonstrated the practical healing power of spiritual man’s at-one-ment with God, Spirit, which includes the spritual universe described in the first chapter of Genesis.
We deeply appreciate what Christ Jesus and his followers showed us, and take to heart his words: “…He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.” (John 14:12)
We nurture commemoration of Jesus’ words and works through individual study of the Pastor, and we bear witness together on Wednesday evenings to the Christ’s healing power in our lives today.
Our Monday evening Zooms are open to the public to join in prayer for our world afrer discussing one or two articles from The Christian Science Monitor usually posted by Saturday evening.
“Kingdom of heaven” experiences resulting from daily communion with our Father-Mother in our practice of Christian Science bless the broader community and keep us in the “narrow way.” We invite you to walk along. All are welcome at services.
Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it. Matt: 7:13,14 (KJV)
